The DAISY Report is the first comprehensive skill analysis of the German AI job market.

Which AI skills are German companies really looking for? Not the ones they state in surveys — but the ones they require in their job advertisements.

For the DAISY Report 2026, nejo and data:unplugged analyzed 324,445 advertised positions in Germany. 13,076 of these require data and AI skills. The analysis is based on the DAISY Ontology — a specially developed skill classification with 525 data and AI skills that goes far beyond existing standards like ESCO.

5 surprising facts

01

90% of AI jobs are invisible

They are not called Data Scientists or AI Engineers. They are called Controllers, DevOps Engineers, Product Owners. The AI transformation is taking place within existing job roles, not in new job profiles.

02

Fraunhofer is the largest AI employer

Not Google, not Amazon, not SAP. The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft has the most open AI positions with 231 in May 2026. Research, industry, and banks dominate – not tech corporations.

03

For every junior position, there are four senior positions

Only 953 out of 13,076 AI positions are aimed at entry-level professionals. The German economy is consuming AI talent without training new talent.

04

Python is unrivaled

4,216 mentions, three times more frequent than Java. Every third AI position requires Python. And MATLAB remains in the German Top 4 – a unique characteristic found only here.

05

Governance is falling short

Only 1.9% of all skill mentions relate to Data & AI Governance. Germany is developing AI at a record pace, but barely safeguarding it.
